At Lower Drayton we are committed to education – We are CEVAS trained, and able to demonstrate to young people what goes on behind the hedge – how food is produced and explain how we keep the countryside as a safe habitat for wild animals, flora and birds.
We offer hands on study in the fields, from digging potatoes, bug hunting, counting and calculating corn grains in a given area, memory collecting sticks, the life cycle of beef and lots more.
We work with teachers to bring to life very diverse curriculum based topics linked to food production. We are a real, environmentally friendly farm, with all the sights, sounds and smells that are captured by the imagination and remain in the memory of young people.
At Lower Drayton Farm, while we’re committed to education, we believe that taking time out is just as important – visit the LDF Entertainment Hub page for information on the broad range of activities on offer at the farm.
FACILITIES
We have an education room (comfortably seats 30 people), which was originally a corn store. The old pulley used to heave bags of corn into the loft is still in situ. We also have toilet and hand washing facilities, a good picnic area for use during warm weather.
ITINERY
We can offer Farmer/pupil discussion to begin the day (covering health & safety issues as well), then a farm trail walk following hedgerows, fields and watercourse – pointing out all the wildlife, flora and birds, stewardship and crops. We like to find out how the visit must tie in with the curriculum and if possible offer a ‘twilight visit‘ for teachers, so that we can all meet to discuss your requirements.
The day usually begins at 10am and finishes around 2pm, but we can tailor times to suit your school and what you need from the day. We can also ask other experts to join in during the day if you so wish.
NEW PEOPLE CARRIER NOW IN ACTION
We are proud to present our new people carrier, which can be used to ferry people around the farm on educational visits or for recreation. This year we are offering, to people who visit our Maize Maze the opportunity to have a ride around the farm on our carrier which will be pulled by a Massey Ferguson tractor. The trailer is fitted with super coach seats and seat belts to ensure safety at all times. We can also accommodate wheelchairs.
POND DIPPING
If you would like to bring your children or supervised groups pond dipping. We have decking around the pool, so that dipping can be done without getting wet feet!! Contact us to arrange. It is a very worthwhile activity, teaching youngsters about ‘water creatures’ and of course it’s a lot of fun!!
